Mentoring Case Study

Julie’s Story

Konnect Communities logo

Background:

Julie had previously been let down by other support services and was reluctant to engage with Konnect. She struggled with social anxiety and had multiple and complex issues; she suffered from poor mental health and was classed as homeless.

Konnect's Support:

Due to Julie’s social anxiety, her mentor agreed to meet with her at her home (following a risk assessment). Rapport was built during initial meetings until Julie felt able to open up about her mental health struggles and thoughts of suicide. Julie expressed that the main contributing factor was her housing situation, so this was made a priority, with a Social Service referral made in collaboration with Julie.

Julie slowly began to open up more and further needs were discussed. During the process, Julie did experience knockbacks which left Julie feeling like she wanted to give up. Her concerns were validated by the Konnect mentor who reassured her that these knockbacks would help to improve her resilience.

Julie expressed that her time with Konnect allowed her to vent. This felt vital to her as she felt socially isolated. Just being able to talk helped her immensely.

It truly overwhelms me to see the difference in Julie’s ability to tackle problems from the first time we met to now. Being able to work with Julie for a longer period offered the opportunity to rebuild her trust in support services and I am confident she will go on to thrive, settled in her permanent home.

Konnect's Impact:

Julie’s resilience to knockbacks slowly improved and she was able to form and maintain a positive outlook and focus on end goals.

Our mentor worked with her for over a year and achieved many small wins including reducing her debt, setting up payment plans to avoid bailiffs and allowing her to access funding for food, clothing and essential transport.

Through this, she was able to then access doctors and hospital appointments and complete an ADHD assessment.
