John’s Story

December 2021

Background:

John was referred to Konnect through his probation officer. He had a history of substance misuse and was struggling with his mental health. He suffered from depression, anxiety and complex PTSD (for which he is medicated and in receipt of PIP). He had previously attempted suicide. He was doing well and trying to avoid negative associates but he was at risk of eviction due to previous issues at his place of residence. He expressed that he was bored and wanted structure to his day. He had a strong desire to live a “normal life” in a nice flat and with a job. John also had a court date looming but had no legal representation in place.

Konnect's Support:

John was able to explain his situation, his concerns and his aims through regular meetings with his Konnect mentor.
The most pressing concern was the pending court hearing; he had been passed details of solicitors and had tried, without success, to get hold of them. The Konnect mentor was able to access the solicitors and explain that the situation was causing stress; due to massive waiting lists, the solicitors suggested that John request an adjournment so that he could be represented. The Konnect mentor also arranged to be present in court during his hearing. John was able to discuss his goals to live the life he wants; he had qualifications and was willing to travel to work, but was worried that his criminal history would be a barrier.
Konnect supported him with writing a CV and a Magna Vitae to tell his story to employers.
With John’s permission, we contacted Man Down to support him with his mental health.

“John has made significant progress and is able to reflect on the changes he has made in his life. He has developed a new sense of selfworth and resilience and is looking forward to a new chapter in his life.

Konnect's Impact:

Through weekly meetings with John, Konnect was able to create a clear plan for John to move forward. He completed Konnect’s Life Choices Course and was engaging and proactive throughout.
His mental health improved and with the support of his GP, Konnect and the Cornwall Mental Health Team, John has not attempted suicide again, nor has he become intoxicated through drugs or alcohol.
Konnect supported John in furthering his training. John was accepted on a Bricklaying Course at Penwith College and, by completing funding forms, this was fully funded. He has also made contact with ReBuild Southwest and has started a CSCS Course with voluntary work and has been referred to the National Careers Service for ongoing employment support.
Konnect purchased smart clothing for John’s court date; his case ended on a positive note and John was no longer at risk of eviction.
He has made contact with his family and has moved forward with previous issues. John has a new sense of self-worth and resilience and has managed to face difficulties without resorting to drugs and alcohol.
His next goal is to find improved accommodation to further move him forwards.
